A Raise is No Longer a Sufficient Reward

Tuesday, August 23rd, 2011

Employees’ satisfaction with their recognition is not truly measured by the company, but by the employee.  And, although it is easy for companies to simply give employees recognition by giving a raise, employees are not satisfied with this outcome.  Employees want more; they want to feel as though their employer cares about what they want for their efforts, not what the company is willing to give.  The top five reward satisfaction points based on a recent poll were:

  1. Career development opportunities
  2. Merit increases
  3. Base pay amounts
  4. Non-financial recognition
  5. Employee development/training

This goes to show that money is not always the answer.  Further development and training is valuable because it appears to be an investment in that employee’s future with that company.  Non-financial recognition is favorable because it allows the employee to splurge with their reward.  Gift cards make a non-financial reward.  For instance, a restaurant gift card to places such as Maggiano’s Little Italy or Chili’s allows an employee to appreciate their reward by treating themselves, as well as loved ones.  A reward like this allows the employee to experience something special and different from their routine.  How do you reward your employees? based on these findings do you think it is time to adjust your employee reward program?

The Importance of Maintaining Recognition Programs

Thursday, August 18th, 2011

We all see businesses tightening their belts.  They are cutting back on staff gatherings, even scaling back the services offered within the office (such as fancy coffee machines and extraneous office supplies), but through these tough and uncertain times do not cut your employee recognition program! The formal recognition of positive employee behavior is essential to the success of your business and the satisfaction of your employees.  According to research done by HospitalityNet employee job satisfaction decreases significantly as recognition programs are scaled back or eliminated.  If you do not recognize your employees hard work, they will not recognize the positive parts of their participation in your company.  Check out the staggering numbers in the table below, another fantastic piece of research from HospitalityNet:

This proves that you must recognize your employees, because during these uncertain economic times you want to be able to rely on your employees.  Without them, your business cannot run and be successful, but with a happy, grateful workforce your company can grow and flourish, regardless of the economic climate.  Recognition can be as big as a seasonal staff gathering, and as small as offering a gift card to a retailer an employee shops at frequently.  Whatever it is, make sure your recognition programs do not get cut, it may put your business at significant risk.

As Unemployment Drops, Employee Retention Becomes Crucial

Tuesday, July 19th, 2011

This interesting Canadien article pointed out a seemingly obvious but interesting point.  As unemployment rates drop employees gain an advantage over employers in terms of the job search.  Employers find during these times of transition, when the unemployment rate is dropping and employees tend to start to look around the job market, that they need to ensure that their employees stay happy.  How to keep employees happy? Incentive programs! A poll of 429 businesses found that more often than not, business owners count on employee incentive programs to draw and maintain motivated employees.  Increased employee motivation is the top priority of 88% of respondents.  Gift cards are an incredibly effective way to motivate your employees.  They are easy to administer and use, they hold trophy value, and show true thought when given from employers to employees.  How high on your priority list is employee motivation this year? How do you incent your employees?

Loyalty Points…in the office?

Friday, July 1st, 2011

A fairly innovative way to use loyalty points, similar to systems credit card companies use, is now being placed in business to monitor and reward employees.  When employees perform well they receive points, instead of a bonus.  When an employee has enough points accrued they can redeem the points for experiences, travel, and gift cards.  This system is also beneficial for managers because they can monitor an employee’s progress and performance over time.  If an employee does not accrue points at an acceptable rate it is obvious that the employee performance is not up to par.  This is a cool application of loyalty point systems and redemption.  A system like this is adds more fun, excitement & interactivity to workplace rewards as people will engage with the system as they accrue points.

We heard about this system being used in the UK but do you know of any US companies doing this? If so, leave us a comment.  We really like this idea as a fresh way to engage employees because, for example,it might be nice to have a free gift card over a long holiday weekend!

Are you ready for mobile marketing and mobile commerce?

Tuesday, April 26th, 2011

Widespread mobile internet adoption is upon us and this graphic by B2B Bloggers suggests when it’s due to over-take desktop internet usage. When will more people look to their mobile devices vs. their PC’s to receive their retail marketing messages, coupons, and redeem their gift cards? Is 2014 the tipping point?

B2B gift card programs are following this trend closely. Employee incentive and loyalty programs are designed to be fun, interactive and timely in order to engage participants. As heavy mobile adopters become the majority of employees, incentive program participants and loyalty rewards recipients will utilize mobile wallets, which include apps storing their gift cards.

Question coming soon to an office near you: “Can I receive my incentive gift card on my mobile phone?”

Tuesday, April 12th, 2011

To build on our post last week regarding use of Social Media for Employee Recognition (article can be found by clicking here) we would like to provide some additional strategies for employee recognition in the age of social media.

  • Send “thank you” e-cards acknowledging their peers’ efforts or assistance
  • Nominate individual coworkers or teams for awards or recognizing special accomplishments
  • Redeem “on-the-spot” rewards, acknowledgements, and prizes
  • Be widely recognized by managers for good work and achievements
  • Brand and product information can be delivered in micro-bursts (tweets, texts, games) or more in-depth with online “learn & earns” and podcasts.
  • Turbo charge product line launches and roll-outs with an exciting mix of social and traditional communication methods (games, contests) and events.

These strategies allow immediacy in recognition, and provide fun interactive ways to engage employees and teams in acknowledging good work, and positive professional practice.

Social Media and Employee Recognition

Friday, April 8th, 2011

Everyone uses social media to communicate what they are doing and how they are feeling, good or bad, positive or negative.  It is a way to broadcast your thoughts in a largely unfiltered environment.  Furthermore social media is unescapable, and infiltrates our lives more and more as social media practices progress.  So why not use social media as a vehicle for employee recognition?  It gets the message out from an original source, there is a widespread audience seeing the recognition, and the employee gets recognized instantaneously for good behavior, or a professional achievement.  To learn more about social media employee recognition click here.
